Part 2: Platform Teams Driving Standardization for AI Readiness
Following our exploration of API ROI challenges in Part 1, this instalment focuses on another critical pattern I observed when working with customers: organisations often believe purchasing a new centralised API gateway will solve their fragmentation problems, especially when preparing for AI integration. However, this approach alone rarely succeeds.
When organisations operate multiple API gateways across divisions, the fundamental challenge isn't technology—it's organisational strategy and governance. Most modern gateways provide adequate capabilities; inconsistent implementation and standards are the real issue.
Simply consolidating to a new API gateway without addressing these foundational issues is like moving to a new house without changing your habits—the same mess quickly reappears, only now with a higher price tag. I've seen organisations invest millions in new gateways only to recreate the same fragmented experiences within months.
A common platform capability becomes particularly critical for AI integration, where technologies like MCP and AI agents require consistent, streamlined API access. Organisations with unified API governance can deploy AI solutions in days rather than months, while those with fragmented approaches—regardless of gateway technology—struggle with implementation.
Before making gateway decisions, ask these crucial questions:
Is your organisation maintaining separate governance and deployment models for AI and API gateways, creating potential inefficiencies?
Have you developed a unified lifecycle management approach that treats both traditional APIs and AI endpoints consistently?
Have you independently assessed how your current gateway capabilities align with AI transformation needs?
Would a thorough evaluation of your API implementation practices reveal opportunities to accelerate AI adoption?
Who drives both the API platform strategy and its alignment with AI initiatives?
The path forward involves evaluating your implementation practices, governance models, and organisational standards before making a decision to leverage existing API gateway investments or get a new one. This approach creates the consistent foundation that AI technologies demand to function effectively.
What has your experience been with API gateway consolidation? I'd love to connect and hear about patterns you're seeing in the market.
